From the moment we saw this loft space in the Honoiki home, we knew we wanted to think outside the box and “hang” a bed. The space was the ideal height and we knew it would instantly make this sweet space (which had previously been treated as an after thought) so special. As most of you know, having a great idea is one thing, making it happen is a completely different story. This project was no different. So we designed the bed and had it custom built. Next we asked the construction crew to add support beams to properly sustain the weight then brainstormed how to safely secure it while not diminishing the beauty of it.
It took two men (plus a little direction from Kathy) to get the heavy frame into place but the process went surprisingly smooth. The construction team had no problem testing things out once the bed was hung (kids at heart)! Making sure it could sustain lots of weight and to avoid the possibility of holes in the newly painted walls, the bed was also secured to the floor.
After everything was secured and ready, Kathy spent some time fraying the ends of each rope by hand. Finishing it with custom pillows and a quilt brought it all together.
