… to a small space.

Most of our clients come to us with dreams of a cozy space where they can kick up their feet and relax…where guests feel comfortable and entertaining flows naturally. However, when you are limited on space, it can be hard to find the balance between cozy and cluttered. We have a few tricks we like to use when designing smaller spaces.

Use an ottoman in place of a coffee table. You can throw a tray on top to give guests a place to set their drinks, or leave it empty for extra seating. Or, if a space isn’t deep enough to accommodate a traditional sized coffee table, try using a narrow bench like the one we placed in the family room. The same goes with a dining room, try using a bench in place of chairs. In this home we placed the dining table in front of a window bench to allow for extra seating. In small spaces, storage can be an issue–so we placed a cabinet in the bathroom for extra towels. We also put a cabinet in the living room that is perfect for hiding a TV and other unsightly items.

These clients were looking for a light, bright space perfect for entertaining guests with a touch of whimsy. With three kids in different stages of life (one grown, one in college and the youngest still in high school) the design was created to accommodate the clients’ ever changing life. The more spaces to gather, the better–we were able to give them a living room and family room, as well as a dining area and breakfast table. The pops of blue and green add life to the space and the bright white walls open up the home. We love the way the vintage lead-glass windows hang so perfectly in the cut outs and separate two rooms. The final touches included lots of family photos and fun natural accessories. Enjoy!
