It’s that time again—Friday Favorites are here! I thought I’d share something close to my heart as a homemaker and an interior designer…ambiance! Whether I’m revealing a design to a client for the first time or walking into my own home after a day of work, the lighting, the scent, and the sounds can make all the difference. So, without further ado… here are a few of my favorite ways to add ambiance to any home!

1. Lighting is everything. I personally love to keep my lamps on a timer, so that whenever I’m inside there’s a nice glow throughout my home. A low-wattage light adds warmth and soft luminance for relaxation—even better if the lamp can add a pop of unique design!

2. Along with turning on the light fixtures, a few lit candles not only add some glimmer but a lovely scent to the atmosphere. As the day fades into evening, candles just make a home feel, well, like home! A few of my go-to candles include Park Hill’s Southern Charm and Gardenia from Illume. Both scents are subtle and fresh—as if you’ve just opened the windows and the scent of fresh flowers has wafted in…

3. Speaking of flowers, adding flower boxes to the outside of a home can give the exterior a real lift! One of the most darling details in French architecture is that there are flower boxes everywhere—after a special trip to France with my husband one spring, we came home and immediately hung them under most of our windows. I mean, there’s something sweet about seeing happy snapdragons just outside your window.

4. After I’ve checked off the lighting, scent, and visual ambiance of a home, the only thing left is the sound. For me, playing Hawaiian style music all around our residence sets the tone for my day. And when I walk in at sunset, something laid-back and soft makes me feel like I can come in, slide off my sandals, and sink into the couch. Really, what could be better?
